What a long strange trip it has been. From a former heroin abuser in a poor neighborhood in Michigan, to Michigan's 2007 Hispanic Artist of the Year, I constantly thank my blessings. Thanks for you for visiting my blog where I discuss what matters in education. I hope you enjoy my articles dealing with education and how we can improve education across the nation. What Teacher Made The Biggest Difference In Your Life?
May 8th, 2008
I had some excellent teachers at Adrian Madison. It was the only school I had ever attended from K-12. I loved Mrs. Rambo, my kindergarten teacher who turned me on to the biggest box of crayons I had ever seen. Poor boys in Sunnyside can’t afford the big 64 pack with a sharpener. But she had boxes of these for free! I just had to figure out how to impress upon her the fact that I needed what she had in her magical kingdom.
It got better. Mrs. McCormick taught us how to put the letters together. I was amazed at how she could tell us stories just by looking at the pictures. I suppose the words helped out too. Story time was the bomb. She would take us far away from the barrio to a land of castles and kings and queens just by opening the cover of each book.
There is another person who I need to acknowledge. She took the time to ask me what I thought “the South Pacific looked like”….I remember the unit on Hawaii! Thank you to Mrs. Blaine. Because of you I now live in Hawaii, on the island of Kauai, with my family. I am doing what I love and loving what I do! You touched my life and changed it. I Thank You for all you did!
So reach in and share how your teachers inspired you so that you could become who you are now.
