What a long strange trip it has been. From a former heroin abuser in a poor neighborhood in Michigan, to Michigan's 2007 Hispanic Artist of the Year, I constantly thank my blessings. Thanks for you for visiting my blog where I discuss what matters in education. I hope you enjoy my articles dealing with education and how we can improve education across the nation. Merit Pay For Great Teachers?

September 13th, 2008

I taught for twenty one years in Detroit, Michigan and all that time I heard plenty of talk about merit pay.  It never happened.  So I decided to reward my wife and family by moving to Kauai.  Now I got this idea that hard working teachers should be discovered through the mouths of babes.  If I saw solid evidence that an at risk student has overcome obstacles through mentorship above and beyond duty, then why can’t society reward them with a trip to Hawaii.  So where do hard working Hawaiian teachers want to go for their dream vacation?  Let me go ask a few teachers here, and I will have an answer.

Maybe a gas card or housing assistance would help some dedicated teachers.  I use the bus here to help keep Kauai green.  I have to walk to the bus stop where I usually see an egret perched on the back of a horse in a meadow with a cool mountain in the background.  I think hard working teachers would appreciate the therapeutic qualities of Kauai.  We don’t have skyscrapers here, just pristine beauty that relaxes your mind.
